In the spirit of my resolution(s) to get healthier this year, I’ve been reading a lot of what Leo Babauta writes over at Zen Habits. His most recent post describes his relationship with food and details what you’d find him eating throughout a typical day. And I have to say this - while I agree that too many Americans eat too much eggs and dairy, I cannot agree that these things are wrong to eat, per se. I believe in eating local, and that includes naturally raised meats and other animal products. I love cheese. I love eggs. I cannot give these up!

I did, however, find wisdom in his words and especially enjoy his post regarding healthy breakfasts. I am looking forward to attempting the linked recipe for Gibb’s banana oat bran muffins (perhaps with a bit of coconut oil?) and establishing a morning routine. I believe that one poor decision at breakfast-time leads to poor decisions later on.

In my post today, you are viewing the flip side: that insatiable, gluttonous desire for meat and barbecue sauce, courtesy of Brand BBQ Market down the street from us in Logan Square. I believe in balance. I believe in food cravings. I am not healthy right now, and I know that. I can feel it and I need to do something about it. Rather than deprive myself of lavish meals, my plan of attack is more forgiving, more realistic. Get on a workout routine. Eat less sugar, white flour/rice/breads, meat, and dairy. Eat more fruit, veggies, whole grains, and nuts. The latter list sounds just as appealing (if not more so) than the former.

NOW. That being said, if you’re looking for some delicious, affordable BBQ on the Northwest side of the city - check out Brand. I recommend the standard chopped pork sandwich and a side portion (ONLY!) of burnt ends mac & cheese. They’ve got an AMAZING bacon honey butter, which may sound gratuitous and shameful but which is, rather, delightfully pleasing and artful. My brother and I tried some at a local bacon-centric event last weekend, and I was smitten. Highly recommended - hoard it like that last pack of 600 film and enjoy it as a subtle (or not) flavor topper on nearly anything. I love it, and would never give it up.
